It’s time for “this date in history.” On May 27, 1889, the American petrochemical corporation South Penn Oil Company (later the Pennzoil Company) was founded in Pennsylvania. On May 27, 1930, the Chrysler Building opened in New York City and, at the time, was the tallest man-made structure in the world. On May 27, 1933 Walt Disney released the animated short film The Three Little Pigs featuring the song Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf? The song highlighted resilience in the face of adversity as Americans were still reeling from the impact of the Great Depression. Just a few years later on May 27, 1937, San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge opened for foot traffic and highlighted a magnificent technological, engineering, and artistic achievement–it was the tallest and longest suspension bridge for decades.
