It’s time for “this date in history.” On May 22, 1781, General George Washington of the Continental Army and Comte de Rochambeau of the French Army met at a Wethersfield merchant’s home to plan a military campaign against the British–the plan would lead to a Patriot victory several months later during the Yorktown Campaign and it signaled the end of the American Revolution. The home Washington stayed in, the Webb House, is one of three historic homes that make up the Webb-Deane-Stevens museum in Old Wethersfield. In pop culture, on this day in 1980, the legendary arcade game Pac-Man was released in Japan and soon made its way to America instantly becoming a cultural icon. Today, over 30 official spin-offs of the game have been produced and Pac-Man continually has the highest brand awareness of all video game characters among Americans with a 94 percent recognition of the famous yellow figure. On May 22, 1992, the legend of late night talk shows Johnny Carson made his final appearance on The Tonight Show. Famous movie releases on this date include Alien 3, Mission: Impossible, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Thanks for listening to this date in history.
