It’s time for “this date in history.” On May 21, Clara Barton founded the American Association of the Red Cross, later named the American Red Cross. On May 21, 1901, Connecticut became the first state to pass a speed limit law for automobiles. The law required cars to not exceed 12 mph within city limits and no more than 15 mph on rural or suburban roads. The law also provided governance over the interactions between automobiles and horse-drawn carriages which were still widely used at the time. Vehicles were required to slow down at the sight of any horses and if the horse seemed scared, the car was required to stop. On May 21, Charles Lindburgh completed the first solo, nonstop transatlantic flight. Five years later to the day, Amelia Earhart became the first woman to pilot an airplane solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Popular movies released on this date include: Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, Annie, Mad Max 2, Notting Hill, and Shrek Forever After. Thanks for listening to this date in history.
