SCHOOL NEWS:
It’s time for “this date in history.” On April 10, 1849, the safety pin was patented by American Walter Hunt who sold the rights for $400. The inspiration for his invention was as a result of a need to clear a $15 debt. After selling his patent, he would never make any more profit from this invention–an invention that would become popular worldwide and remains in use today. On April 10, 1872, the state of Nebraska celebrated the first Arbor Day, planting more than 1,000,000 trees–other U.S. states and nations would eventually observe the holiday as well. On this date in 1925, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby” was published and soon became a quintessential book on the idea of the “American Dream” during the 1920’s. On April 10, 1953, the first color 3D film was shown called House of Wax, a horror film featuring Vincent Price. Sticking with film, on April 10, 1957, the film 12 Angry Men was released in the United States and it remains one of the most regarded films of all time. Thanks for listening to this date in history.
