March 30, 2026
SCHOOL NEWS:
It’s time for “this date in history.” On March 30, 1867, U.S. Secretary of State William Seward signed a treaty with Russia for the purchase of Alaska for $7 million, about 2 cents an acre. First nicknamed Seward’s Folly, the acquisition of Alaska as territory would eventually lead to its statehood many decades later. On March 30, 1919, Igor Sikorsky arrived in the United States. Sikorsky fled Russia shortly after the Russian Revolution and, after a brief time in Paris, arrived in the United States to pursue his passion of vertical-aircraft. The eventual landing spot for his company was Stratford, Connecticut. Soon his version of the helicopter would define the industry. Today the Sikorsky Aircraft corporation is the world’s leading producer of military and commercial helicopters and is one of Connecticut’s most historically significant businesses. And in pop culture, on this date in 1939, Batman first appeared in Detective Comics No. 27. Thanks for listening to this date in history.
