SCHOOL NEWS:
It’s time for “this date in history.” On March 3, 1871 Congress created the US Centennial Commission and President Ulysses S. Grant chose Joseph Hawley from Connecticut, a Civil War general, to be its President. His primary mission was to plan for the first World’s Fair to be hosted on American soil. Philadelphia was chosen as the city to host and the exposition took place in 1876. Memorable items seen by many at the fair included Alexander Graham Bell’s telephone, one of the earliest typewriters, and it was the first time that the American public was introduced to bananas, popcorn, and Heinz ketchup. On this date in 1931, the Star Spangled Banner was officially adopted by Congress as the national anthem for the United States. And on this day in 1932, Time published its first issue with a cover price of 15 cents. Thanks for listening to this date in history.
Attention seniors, tomorrow we will be collecting payments during lunch in the Seminar Room. The next in-person collections will be at the end of the month.
